IVF / ICSI
In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a reproductive technology in which medication injections are given to develop an increased number of eggs that are then removed from a woman and mixed with a sperm cell from a man in a test tube (in vitro). The cells fuse to form a single cell, which then starts dividing, becoming an embryo. When the embryo is between 8-100 cells large, it is implanted in the woman’s uterus, and, if the cells are genetically normal it will hopefully develop into an embryo, a foetus and then a baby.
Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an in-vitro insemination procedure in which a single sperm is injected directly into each egg. ICSI is performed as part of the IVF process when the sperm numbers or motility are too low for the sperm to fertilise the egg by itself, or when frozen sperm is being used.
