Like costs, success rates can be difficult to pinpoint. Much of the data collected from clinics, especially in Australia, is collected in such a way that can warp the truth. It is very hard to look a clinics reported IVF success rates as it is very easy to “massage clinic data” to present numbers that only reflect the results of groups of patients already likely to have high pregnancy success. If a clinic suggests they have a 60% success rate it is important to note, this may not necessarily be that case for your personal situation.
The truth is, women and couples undergoing fertility treatment are already having trouble conceiving. IVF presents an amazing opportunity, improving pregnancy rates in the shortest possible time. On average, a normal fertile couple will have a 25% chance of falling pregnant every month. Same sex couples and single women generally need fertility treatment of some sort to conceive. When there is a clear identifiable reason for low fertility such as a low sperm count, blocked fallopian tubes or the absence of sperm, IVF success rates are very good.

The endometrium is not always optimal for embryos to implant and co-existing medical conditions can negatively impact the chances of falling pregnant even with IVF. Many patients conceive with their first or second cycle of IVF, but for some patients, a number of IVF cycles may be needed and it is important to understand this possibility from the outset.
